The end is nigh…or is it?

Mayan calendar

Mayan calendar

December 21, 2012 is fast approaching and according to the Mayan calendar it’s the day we all die. But then there is also December 23, 2012 which could also be the day we all die. Actually, the Mayan calendar doesn’t say anything about the world ending in December of 2012 or anytime in the next five, six…ten billion years. In fact the Mayan calendar may have already come to an end. There is really no reason to assume that the world will be ending anytime soon. So why then have heard so much about this ancient, mystical race of highly intelligent people that created a calendar that predicts the end of the world and then vanished? Because people are easily fooled and because if people think there will be no tomorrow then they will spend their money like there isn’t one. Oh, and also they didn’t vanish and there actually still Mayan people around today.

The Mayans and their calendar.

Mexico is set to profit nicely from the end of the world. They even have Doomsday tourism packages available and the tourism industry was forecasting more than 52 million people to visit just the states of Chiapas, Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Campeche. That is more than twice the regular number of visitors to the whole of Mexico. Not only will people flock to Mexico and the site of the Mayans but they will be more apt to take that vacation they always dreamed of because you never know, those crazies might be right this time. Then there are also those people who have taken this to extremes and sold all their worldly possessions and those who are racking up major credit card debit because who cares, the world is ending. Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die, right? Sadly though, if we are still around come 2013, it will seriously injure us next year when the world is still here and so is your debit. Individuals are taking advantage of us also with people selling “fallout” shelters for impending doomsday.

You could argue that the real conspiracy is that the Mayans have predicted the end of the world and the powers that be are just trying to keep us all calm but if that’s the case then why have we heard so much for the end of the world but not against it? Most of the news stories with professors and such explaining the calendar to us are swept under the rug and are really only showing up now, when we are already spooked.
